Ted Sargent is a pioneer in solar science. Ted is working on solar nanotechnology with the potential to make solar energy very cheap and allow society to collect it on a huge scale. Currently, solar technology costs more to build and install than most people are willing to pay. Solar panels, for example, the technology most commonly ociated with solar energy, are installed on your rooftop. The cost of collecting one kilowatt per hour of solar energy (about a third of the electricity an average household uses on any given day) is about $11,000.

Not only are panels expensive to install, they capture only the visible portion of the sun’s rays so they work only on sunny days. Ted’s focus is the infrared portion of the sun’s rays which accounts for more than half of all solar energy. What’s more, infrared energy is available to us even in cloudy weather.
A quantum dot is a semiconductor nanostructure that confines the motion of conduction band electrons, valence band holes, or excitons (bound pairs of conduction band electrons and valence band holes) in all three spatial directions. The confinement can be due to electrostatic potentials (generated by external electrodes, doping, strain, impurities), the presence of an interface between different semiconductor materials (e.g. in core-shell nanocrystal systems), the presence of the semiconductor surface (e.g. semiconductor nanocrystal), or a combination of these. A quantum dot has a discrete quantized energy spectrum. The corresponding wave functions are spatially localized within the quantum dot, but extend over many periods of the crystal lattice. A quantum dot contains a small finite number (of the order of 1-100) of conduction band electrons, valence band holes, or excitons, i.e., a finite number of elementary electric charges.

voltage drop is the major problem. were talking hundreds of miles to get anywhere in the sahara.
then where is the power going? tunisia, morrocco, egypt?
its really un-economically viable, as the materials (all environment unfriendly) will cost billions! the world, dont forget is run by big corporations, who are entail backed by multi investors. who’s going to invest in this project

It would be expensive and you could only use it on sunny days, unless you included batteries, battery charger and controller to the list.

A lot would depend on how fast the lift has to move.

Also, elevators/lifts have to be licensed because of the safety hazard. You may have difficulty getting a home-made unit approved. Check with your local building inspector before you start anything.

For the solar power system to work you need to have a PV panel and a storage system. The PV panels functions to generate electricity and the storage system stores the energy for future use.
Batteries are the most common methods for storage of solar energy. There are 2 types of batteries available. They are nickel cadmium and lead acid. The lead acid batteries are cheap and preferred for solar energy storage. They are similar to your car battery. The nickel cadmium battery also functions in the same manner but are expensive. However the nickel cadmium batteries discharge more electricity and also last longer.
There are generally 3 ways of storing solar energy.
Sensible heat storage
For the solar energy units that have middle and low temperatures the cheapest way of storing energy is to use water and stones. The energy that is collected by the collectors increase the temperatures of the storing mediums to allow storage of the energy in these mediums and when required the heat is used. In this method of solar energy storage the concentration level is low and the duration is also short.

Latent heat storage
In this type of solar energy storage the medium for storing the energy has features like absorption of big energy, less volume and corrosion and greater repeating capabilities. At present the most effective mediums for this type of solar energy storage are hydrate carbonates, nitrates and sulphates. In latent heat storage method the energy storing density is high with longer periods of storage. The medium can be cooled easily also which makes it difficult for the medium to crystallize.

Chemical reaction energy storage
Here, the endothermic reaction of the chemicals is used for storing the solar energy. When the process is inversed the heat is released. Here some inorganic oxides are also used as the medium. By using this method you benefit by storing heat in larger quantities and for longer periods of time. For the generation of high temperature by the endothermic reactions the equipments that are needed are very costly.

Zeolites have the unique characteristics to absorb and deabsorb water which makes it the preferred material for solar energy storage. When the zeolites are heated the water molecules escape and the heat energy is stored. When the process of reabsorbing the water molecules starts the heat energy is released.
