Obama has job creation all right! To have prison inmates build solar panels in prison and they GET PAID! How do the homeless like that one? Prisoners get a bed- food- now jobs! WOW! I guess the homeless can break the law- go to prison to get work now! Should we pat Obama on the back?

old habits.
criminals make up the majority of his voting pool. he’s only doing what politicians do. cater to his constituents.

I have seen DIY software which explains everything for novices. Specifically, how to build your own solar panels and tie them into your home electrical system for about $100 in parts.

Has anyone tried doing this? Was it easy?

The local codes in most areas in the US won’t allow you to install a homemade solar panel on your house, it needs to be UL listed. Don’t believe all of those bogus sites that promise you can power your house for $200, you can’t. Also, besides the solar panel, you also need an approved inverter to convert the DC power from the solar panels to AC that your appliances need.

Factory built solar panels are generally guarantied for 20 - 25 years, with a life expectancy of twice that. You will never get that life from a homemade panel.

To save money on a solar installation, you may be able to install at least part of it yourself, but the equipment needs to be UL listed or equivalent.

You can see an example of a very small grid-tied electric system here. You can see that the solar panel is just one component. http://www.altestore.com/store/Kits-and-Package-Deals/Grid-Tied-Systems/Alt-E-Designed-Grid-Tie-Packages/AltE-Grid-Tied-Package-Micro1/p5642/ The output of this system will be very small, but it is a staring point.

You should consider solar water heating as a way to save on your energy bills. Heating your water accounts for about 25% of your energy use. If you can cut that by 75%, you will save a lot of money. Depending on where you are and how many are in your household, it may cost about $5000 for a do-it-yourself installation. There are tax incentives available that could potentially pay for as much as half of the system. These systems can pay for them selves in as little as 4 - 5 years.

Senior Project - We’re trying to build a solar powered go kart. We have two 40Watt panels that are 15V each, and 5 Amps each. We are going to use two 12V batteries to run the motor. We want to charge these batteries using the panels, however we don’t know what type of charger we need. Where can we find a charger that is DC in and out? Any info will help :-) Thanks in advance!
Is it better to get an altenator?

yes, it’s called a charge controller.

A 15 volt panel is marginal to charge a 12 volt battery, you need something more like 20 volts.

A 12 volt battery needs 15 volts with some current to be charged.
A 15 volt panel will only put that out with full sunlight, and not with any substantial current.

Best is a charge controller (see second reference) that includes a DC-DC converter to adjust the voltage to the optimal value to charge the battery. With this it will be better to put the panels in series and the batteries in parallel so you can charge them both at the same time with one charge controller.

i need some digragm and explanation it ,my mail address in derrydee2010@yahoo.com.thank you all in anticipation.

most solar panels are 12V. you can hook it up directly to a battery for 12V usage. if you need 110VAC, you need a power inverter.

you don’t want a capacitor, a big one that holds as much energy as a battery is probably too dangerous

i want to run my two bedroom one bath apartment on solar power, but i need it to be cheap. i need to know how much it would cost for every i need, and where to get it all. i hear its cheaper to build solar panels your self.

True, it is cheaper to build solar panels yourself, providing you have the skills needed. But Nanosolar now is a different story. Nanosolar is largely produced as an inkjet operating on an aluminum foil roll, so that it produces many square meters of solar collector for the cost of one traditional panel. There is not any product available that will make solar electricity cheap compared to nuclear generated electricity, other than Nanosolar. You might want to look up Nanosolar.com

Everyone finds it ideal to have homemade solar panels installed even before your dream house is ready, it is most efficient and cost effective to build your own homemade solar panels rather than buying them, this way you could be saving thousands that you can use for other home improvements. The best part of it all is that you can save on your energy bills for a lifetime and don’t worry — solar panels aren’t that hard to build, there are several great guides that give you step-by-step instructions to make a fully functional solar power system.

Even before starting to make your solar panels you need a little research and find the most profitable components for your DIY project. In fact we’ve done all the research for you and came up with a few conclusions. You need two basic things to get started, a solid DIY guide and all the necessary components. You won’t be spending more than two hundred dollars since all the parts are quite cheap in most hardware shops.

You’ll need to make up a list of all the components you need and carefully research for each one of them to find the best price. We’ve spend in excess one month to find all the parts that are required to install a fully functional solar panel. New solar cells can be costly, depending where you’re buying them from. There are several retailers that are selling used solar cells for a quarter of the normal price. (You need to be careful some of these cells might be damaged). Anyway there’s no need to worry because a solid DIY guide will help you not only build solar panels but give you step by step instructions on how to get all the necessary parts at the cheapest price.

Depending on how much energy you will need, you might have to build more than one solar panel and obviously the price will go up a little. Another thing to know is that solar cells are fragile even if they don’t seem to be. They can easily be damaged so handle them carefully. A solid homemade solar panel plan should contain all the information you need to build and use a solar power system and not only that but it must have an online tech support team just in case you’re having any difficulties.

Make Your Own Power No More Power Bills

I read and came across all these websites, are they for real and how reliable is it?

There’s no way that "home built" system that will generate enough power to run your home "off the grid". That’s all hogwash! No wind = no electricity generated. No sun = no electricity generated.

I’m looking into a grid tie solar system. I’m still working out the math for my home. They are expensive ($20k - $50k) before tax credits, but they have been designed by engineers, not back yard, shade tree wanna-be engineers. They will put power into the grid during the day (making your meter run backwards) and you’ll draw the power back at night (when there’s no sun). This is perfectly legal. It must be installed by power company approved techs. That’s how power companies are going to meet their "green energy" mandates for the future. You’ll generate power for the power company and get paid wholesale prices for it (during the day). But you’ll buy it back at retail (at night)
